Rachel Horne is a Northern Irish journalist, newsreader and broadcaster whose career has included BBC Newsround, business journalism, BBC Radio 2 and Virgin Radio UK. Although many viewers now discover her through her marriage to comedian and Taskmaster creator Alex Horne, she built her broadcasting career independently years before Taskmaster became a television success. She left The Chris Evans Breakfast Show on Virgin Radio in March 2024 after five years with the station, while later television credits have kept her connected to Alex Horne’s comedy world.

Rachel Horne Had a Broadcasting Career Long Before Taskmaster

Describing Rachel simply as “Alex Horne’s wife” misses the main reason she warrants a profile of her own. She spent years working across British television and radio, moving between children’s news, business coverage, rolling television news and breakfast radio.

Rachel, whose maiden name was Rachel Gibson, grew up in County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland. In a 2017 interview with the Belfast Telegraph, she discussed her upbringing in Fermanagh and the path that eventually led her into journalism in London.

She later studied at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. A 2024 feature published by the college confirms that Rachel and Alex Horne knew each other there and includes a photograph of “Alex Horne and Rachel Gibson (now Rachel Horne)” at graduation in 2001. Alex recalled Cambridge as particularly important because he met the woman who would become his wife there. Rachel subsequently continued her studies at City University.

Newsround Made Rachel Horne Familiar to BBC Viewers

One of Rachel Horne’s best-known early roles was presenting Newsround, the BBC’s long-running news programme for younger audiences.

Programme records show she presented Newsround between 2002 and 2006. The job gave her national television exposure and required a style of journalism that could explain serious stories clearly to younger viewers without making them simplistic or sensational.

Her career did not remain centred on children’s television. After Newsround, Rachel moved into business journalism, working on BBC Two’s Working Lunch and later presenting business coverage associated with the BBC News Channel. That transition matters because it shows the range of her work: she moved from youth-focused reporting to financial and economic broadcasting rather than staying tied to one television programme.

From BBC Business Reporting to Breakfast Radio

Rachel eventually became increasingly associated with radio.

In 2018, she joined the weekday morning operation at BBC Radio 2, where she delivered travel information while Chris Evans presented the station’s breakfast show.

When Evans moved to Virgin Radio UK in January 2019, several members of his Radio 2 team moved with him. Contemporary coverage of the new Virgin breakfast programme identified Rachel as the travel presenter, while Virgin Radio also expanded her responsibilities to include news bulletins.

That gave her a different kind of public profile from her earlier BBC television career. Live breakfast radio depended not only on delivering information accurately but also on fitting naturally into a conversational programme built around Evans and the wider presenting team.

Rachel remained part of The Chris Evans Breakfast Show for five years.

Why Did Rachel Horne Leave Virgin Radio?

On 28 March 2024, Virgin Radio announced that Rachel Horne was leaving The Chris Evans Breakfast Show, with that morning serving as her final regular appearance.

Importantly, the station’s own announcement did not present her departure as the result of a dispute or dismissal. Rachel spoke positively about her colleagues, her listeners and the importance her professional identity had held for her.

That distinction matters because celebrity and entertainment pages sometimes turn an unexplained career move into unsupported speculation. The reliable public record supports a straightforward conclusion: Rachel chose to step away from the regular Virgin Radio breakfast role after five years, but no credible evidence establishes a dramatic reason for the departure.

What Is Rachel Horne Doing Now?

No well-sourced announcement has placed Rachel in another permanent national news or radio role since her Virgin Radio departure.

In a June 2025 account of Alex Horne’s appearance on Kate Thornton’s White Wine Question Time, Alex said that Rachel was not working at that point and described their family arrangements as a team effort. He also acknowledged that she had worked extremely hard and had previously been the family’s principal earner during parts of their life together.

That should not be interpreted as evidence that Rachel has formally retired from broadcasting.

She has also remained visible in Alex Horne’s entertainment world. Rachel is credited as herself, primarily through voice appearances, in The Horne Section TV Show, including its second series, which returned to Channel 4 in May 2025. British Comedy Guide records her across multiple episodes of the two-series sitcom.

Rachel Horne and Alex Horne

Rachel and Alex Horne met while studying at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. They later married in 2005 and have three sons.

Their relationship predates Alex’s biggest television success by many years. Taskmaster began as Alex’s creation before developing into one of Britain’s best-known entertainment formats, but Rachel had already established herself in national broadcasting through the BBC.

That chronology is useful because online coverage can create the opposite impression, presenting Rachel as someone who became publicly known only through her husband. In reality, their professional careers developed alongside one another in different areas of British media. Sidney Sussex College’s account of Alex’s university years independently confirms their Cambridge connection.

Do Not Confuse Her With the Other Journalist Named Rachel Horne

Another important source of confusion appears in search results.

A different journalist named Rachel Horne is a Canadian-born writer and multiple-sclerosis research advocate who founded the Rachel Horne Prize for Women’s Research in MS. Her own biography states that she was born in Toronto, studied at McGill University and Columbia Journalism School, and later worked for CNN in London.

She is not the Northern Irish former Newsround and Virgin Radio broadcaster married to Alex Horne.

This distinction matters because combining the two women’s careers can produce inaccurate biographies, including false claims about medical history, research work or professional achievements.

Rachel Horne’s Career in Perspective

Rachel Horne’s public story is therefore broader than her connection to Taskmaster. She moved from Northern Ireland into journalism training, became a nationally recognised Newsround presenter, transitioned into BBC business reporting, worked in morning radio at Radio 2 and then spent five years with Virgin Radio.

Alex Horne is naturally part of the public interest surrounding her, but he is not the foundation of her professional relevance. The strongest account of Rachel Horne is not a celebrity-spouse biography; it is the story of an experienced British broadcaster whose own career crossed several distinct areas of television and radio journalism.
